Ombudsman:
Consistent five-year-old who has won nine of his twelve career starts and finished 2nd on the three other occasions. The John & Thady Gosden trained star was an impressive 3½ length winner of this race last season and has returned this year winning all three of his starts. His latest four length success in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes was a career best performance.
Ombudsman is bidding to become only the fourth horse to win back-to-back Juddmonte Internationals, joining Dahlia (1974-75), Ezzoud (1993-94) and Halling (1995-96). He arrives fresh off a midsummer break, having deliberately skipped the Eclipse in July. Ombudsman silences rumours with sparkling workout under William Buick ahead of blockbuster Juddmonte International clash.
Ombudsman won it last year in roaring fashion and is back for more after a midsummer break which saw him miss the Eclipse in early July. That was a somewhat justified break for the five-year-old, who was in career-best form when winning the Prince Of Wales's Stakes for the second time on June 17th by an easy four lengths.
Constitution River:
Constitution River could face Ombudsman at York. The Prix du Jockey Club winner has been flawless this season, and thumped his elders last time in the Coral-Eclipse.
Three-year-olds carry a 7lb weight allowance against older horses at this time of year. Constitution River receives that allowance from Ombudsman, a meaningful concession over 1m2f. His Eclipse performance, dominating older Group 1 horses at 8/11, was the form that established him as a genuine rival rather than a challenger with potential.
Constitution River smashed the clock in the Dee Stakes, dominated the French Derby with an O'Brien 1, 2, 3 and then made easy work of the Eclipse at 8/11. But for all that he is unbeaten since debut and has won two Group Ones this year, he still has something to prove in my mind.
The tactical dimension: Both Ombudsman and Constitution River have pacemakers entered at this stage and it will be a fascinating race to watch tactically, but I feel last year's winner has a better turn of foot and can pounce late under William Buick.

Item could be a big danger too, given he has won the Dante and York Stakes at the track this year.
