NBA Finals 2026: Knicks vs Spurs Preview, Odds & Best Bets

Nobody picked the New York Knicks to be here. Not in October, when sportsbooks had them at +900 to win the title and listed them ninth in the Eastern Conference. Not in June, when they walked into San Antonio as a +172 underdog against a Spurs team that had just knocked off the OKC Thunder, the preseason favourite at +230, in seven games.

And yet here we are. The Knicks lead the 2026 NBA Finals 2-0, both wins on the road in San Antonio, and Game 3 tips off at Madison Square Garden, the most iconic arena in basketball, in front of a crowd that has been waiting for this moment since 1999.

New York's 13-game postseason winning streak remains intact, fuelled by clutch performances from Jalen Brunson and strong contributions from Karl-Anthony Towns.

Game 2 Recap: The Turnover That Changed Everything

New York bounced back from yet another double-digit deficit to secure a 105-104 Game 2 thriller over the Spurs and a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals on San Antonio's home court.

Exactly halfway through the fourth quarter, the Knicks led by 14 points following an OG Anunoby dunk against Victor Wembanyama, and a 2-0 series lead seemed all but assured. At that moment, according to ESPN Analytics, New York had a 98.2% chance to win the game. But the Spurs came back in a flurry. Led primarily by the left-handed backcourt duo of Dylan Harper and De'Aaron Fox, the Spurs scored 14 consecutive points to tie the score and set up a hectic final few minutes.

Wembanyama took a pass from Dylan Harper in transition for an and-1 layup and made free throw that gave the Spurs a 104-102 lead, their first of the second half. But Brunson came through again. He beat Julian Champagnie for a fallaway elbow jumper to tie the game at 104 with 39.3 seconds remaining.

Then came the moment that defined the series so far.

With the game tied at 104-104, Wembanyama secured a rebound off a missed Brunson jumper with less than 15 seconds remaining. Wembanyama turned upcourt and threw the ball into the back of Stephon Castle, who was looking straight ahead. Brunson corralled the loose ball, and Wembanyama immediately fouled him to send the Knicks guard to the free throw line. Brunson made the decisive free throw. Knicks win. Series 2-0.

After all, Wembanyama was a key reason the Spurs were even in position to win Game 2 in the final minute: He made up for a lacklustre first half with more aggression after halftime and finished with a game-high 29 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

The brutal truth: Wembanyama was brilliant and it still wasn't enough. The Spurs are not losing this series because of a lack of talent. They are losing it because of fourth-quarter execution, and that is a fixable problem, but it needs to be fixed immediately.

San Antonio Spurs 4-215.90

The series exact result market is one of the sharpest bets available. Knicks 4-0 at 2.55 is the most analytically compelling position: they've won 13 straight, both wins came away, and San Antonio's fourth-quarter execution has cost them game-winners in back-to-back games.

Brunson at 1.78 is the most analytically sound outright on the board right now. He made the game-winning shot and free throw across both games. He's averaging 26.6 points in the postseason. Brunson won Clutch Player of the Year and delivered late in New York's Game 1 win. If the Knicks win the series, which at 1.20 is the market expectation, Brunson is the overwhelming MVP favourite regardless of individual stats in Games 3-7.

Towns at 2.50 represents value if you believe his role in the series grows at MSG. Wembanyama at 4.30 can only win this if the Spurs win the series, possible but the longest realistic path.

Analysis: What Each Team Needs in Game 3

The Knicks' Formula: Win, Then Survive

The Knicks have multiple weapons that have been producing throughout the playoffs, and they also have the sport's ultimate closer in Brunson.

The Knicks don't need to win comfortably at MSG. They need to win. Their formula is established: build a lead, survive the opponent's run, let Brunson close. While he was not at his best in Game 1 or 2, he always makes the plays at the end of the game that allow the Knicks to be successful.

Madison Square Garden gives New York a massive advantage. The crowd for Game 3 will be the loudest of any building in the Finals. Brunson thrives on that energy.

What Wembanyama Must Do

Wembanyama is staking a claim as the best player in the world in this postseason, and that requires holding him to a higher standard.

The 22-year-old cannot afford another passive first half. Wembanyama has grown tremendously in his competitiveness throughout the playoffs, and he has the capability of dominating. If he can and gets a big assist from Harper and Champagnie, this game could come down to the wire.

His prop line, 25+ points and 13+ rebounds at 2.35, is one of the most compelling individual markets on the card. Wembanyama at his peak can absolutely hit both numbers. The question is whether he starts assertively enough in the first half.

Historical Context: How Rare Is a 2-0 Comeback?

The historical data is brutal for San Antonio. San Antonio still holds a team that beat the best team in the West in seven games. One bad fourth quarter does not erase that. But the numbers are impossible to ignore.

Only three teams have ever come back from 2-0 down in the NBA Finals. The 2006 Heat (Dwyane Wade's legendary series). The 2016 Cavaliers against the 73-win Warriors. Both involved transcendent individual performances over multiple games. Wembanyama has that ceiling, but the Spurs need him to translate individual brilliance into wins, not just extraordinary statistics in a losing effort.

The Spurs 4-3 at 6.45 is the most realistic comeback scenario on the board. If Wembanyama breaks out for 35-40 points in the first MSG game and the Spurs win, this series changes completely.
