Counter-Strike is coming home. 32 of the world's best teams will once again compete for glory, a $1,250,000 prize pool, and the right to call themselves Counter-Strike 2 Major Champions. The tournament also represents a return of CS Majors to Cologne for the first time since 2016 when FalleN's SK Gaming roster won their second major of the year.
The dramatic return of a CS Major to the Cathedral of Counter-Strike will get underway on June 2. Thirty-two of the world's best CS2 teams will descend on Cologne across three weeks of competition, with a $1,250,000 prize pool and a spot in the ESL Grand Slam VII race on the line.
Team Vitality arrive as the prohibitive favourites at 1.75 on Duelbits Sportsbook, the defending back-to-back Major champions seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title. But the return to Cologne after a decade, a field of 32 hungry teams, and several historic format changes make this the most anticipated CS2 Major since the game's launch.

The IEM Cologne 2026 format features a rigorous four-stage gauntlet designed to crown the world's best CS2 team. The journey begins with three consecutive 16-team Swiss-system stages, where teams must secure three wins to advance or face elimination after three losses.
16 teams compete in a Swiss system. Three wins advance to Stage 2. Three losses mean elimination. Elimination and advancement matches are Best-of-3, with all other matches played as Best-of-1. Eight teams advance.
The eight Stage 1 qualifiers join the eight directly seeded teams and split into two groups of eight, following the same match format. Eight more teams advance to Stage 3.
Stage 3 marks a significant format shift, with all matches played as Best-of-3. This stage introduces live attendance for fans, expanding the in-person experience ahead of the playoffs. This is the first time in CS Major history that an entire stage has been exclusively Bo3. Top 8 advance to Playoffs.
Eight teams. Single-elimination bracket. Quarterfinals and Semifinals are Bo3. Grand Final is Bo5. There is a three-day break between Stage 3 and Playoffs to allow teams to prepare for the quarterfinals.

Team Vitality is the defending Major champion, having won back-to-back Majors at Austin 2025 and Budapest 2025. They enter Cologne on the back of their second consecutive ESL Grand Slam title.
Three consecutive Majors. Two ESL Grand Slams. Vitality at 1.75 is the most dominant outright favourite at any CS2 Major since the game launched. ZywOo, apEX, Spinx, flameZ, and mezii arrive as a team with no obvious weakness and the psychological confidence that comes from two consecutive Major victories.
Their Stage 3 seeding means they skip two full stages of Swiss competition, arriving fresh for the most demanding format (all-Bo3) against the 7 teams who survived Stages 1 and 2. For Vitality, IEM Cologne 2026 is a five-day tournament. For Stage 1 teams, it's three weeks.
For these players, the countdown to immortality in the "Cathedral" has truly begun. The LANXESS Arena is the most iconic esports venue in Counter-Strike history. IEM Cologne has been held here for years and produced some of the most memorable moments in the game's competitive history. The 2026 return, the first Major in Cologne since 2016, carries an emotional weight that extends far beyond prize money.
In a historic first for the Major, all Stage 3 matches will be Best-of-3 to ensure the highest level of competitive integrity. This change fundamentally alters the tournament narrative. Stage 1 and 2 teams who advance through Best-of-1 gauntlets must now navigate a third stage entirely in Bo3, before any of them face Stage 3 seeds like NaVi, MOUZ, Falcons, or the MongolZ. Survival in Stage 3 before even facing Vitality requires elite Bo3 form.
Team Spirit won the non-Major edition of IEM Cologne in 2025. They enter Stage 2 of the 2026 Major and are priced at 6.30, the only team remotely close to Vitality's price with a credible case for going all the way. Their familiarity with LANXESS Arena and the competitive depth to beat Vitality in a Bo5 Grand Final makes them the most compelling outright alternative in the market.
Winner pick: Team Vitality at 1.75. Three consecutive Majors would be historic, but Vitality's dominance in 2026 is so complete that the probability of a fourth title is genuinely higher than 1.75 implies.
Value pick: Team Spirit at 6.30. The Cologne venue specialists, Stage 2 seeds, and the team with the best individual record against Vitality in the field.
Dark horse: Natus Vincere at 8.50. Stage 3 seeds. The most volatile team in the upper tier, capable of beating anyone on a given day, equally capable of an early exit.
| Market | Bet | Odds | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tournament Winner | Team Vitality | 1.75 | Three consecutive Majors, dominant form, fresh Stage 3 entry |
| Tournament Winner | Team Spirit (each-way) | 6.30 | Cologne venue winners, credible challenger, best non-Vitality price |
| Stage 1 Match | MIBR to win | 1.26 | Most lopsided Stage 1 opener, near-certainty vs TDU |
| Stage 1 Match | GamerLegion to win | 1.40 | Strong European side vs NRG in opening Bo1 |
| Stage 1 Match | BetBoom Team to win | 1.32 | Decisive Stage 1 favourite, reliable pick |
| Free Bet Activation | Bet $20 on Team Liquid | 2.05 | Triggers $10 free bet for any sport |
